Pictured on the top left is very mild DF in an 11 year old boy living in GA. The Centers for Disease Control says that approximately 15% of U.S. citizens have this degree of DF. Moderate or severe DF, as pictured on the bottom left, affects approximately 3.4% of blacks, 1.9% of whites, and perhaps 3-4% of hispanics according to the CDC.

Not easily visible in this photo of a 22 year old Georgia university student are small streaks in the second middle front top tooth. The “Dean’s Dental Fluorosis Classification System” calls for dentists to ignore the worst-affected tooth and base the diagnosis on the second-worst-fluoride-stained tooth. So if the teeth are unevenly or irregularly affected, the most visibly stained tooth is ignored, for purposes of classifying the condition - resulting in a downplaying of the disfigurement caused by fluoridated water and other ingested fluorides. If the streaks in the second tooth were not present, this student’s teeth staining would not be even considered “very mild” DF, but would not be classified as DF at all.

These examples of dental fluorosis here have traditionally been dismissed by promoters of water fluoridation as “just a cosmetic defect.” Citizens are expected to be willing to simply accept DF as the price they should be willing to pay for fluoridated water to possibly, maybe cause slightly fewer cavities in themselves and others (fluorides are largely ineffective in stopping cavities in back molars, where they occur most, hence the push for teeth sealants in children). We do not agree that citizens should have DF staining forced upon them without having been told that fluoride causes it, that the disfiguring staining is permanent and costly to repair, and that fluorides affect bone architecture and resistance to fracture.
