The three examples of dental fluorosis here have traditionally been dismissed by promoters of water fluoridation as “just a cosmetic defect.” Citizens are expected to be willing to simply accept DF as the price they should be willing to pay for fluoridated water to possibly, maybe cause slightly fewer cavities in themselves and others (fluorides are largely ineffective in stopping cavities in back molars, where they occur most, hence the push for teeth sealants in children). We do not agree that citizens should have DF staining forced upon them without having been told that fluoride causes it, that the disfiguring staining is permanent and costly to repair, and that fluorides affect bone architecture and resistance to fracture.
